Our Lesson Program

At Cape Elizabeth Equestrian, our mission is to create competent and confident horsemen as well as riders. Everyone learns in different ways and at their own pace. Our goal is to provide a positive learning experience where students are challenged but safe. We are flexible in our teaching methods in order to accommodate all skills and learning modalities.

Lessons provide instruction about preparation and care of the horses in addition to riding.  As students gain experience and independence, they are encouraged to arrive prior to their lesson time in order to practice and prepare their horses independently to the best of their ability.

What to expect in our lessons…

At Cape Elizabeth Equestrian, we teach horsemanship, not just riding. Students learn about horses “from the ground” up, including horse care and handling. Riders are responsible for getting horses ready before lessons as well as aftercare.

Lesson Expectations

*Plan to arrive approximately 30 minutes before each lesson to groom, tack up and ready to ride.

*Newer riders will receive assistance with bridling and mounting at the start of each lesson.

*Experienced riders should be mounted and walking in the arena prior to the start of the lesson.

*Plan to spend 30 minutes following the lesson to properly care for the horse and equipment.

Student guidelines:

  • Cell phone use is restricted to taking photos and videos or immediate needs (such as getting picked up.)

  • Minors 12 & under need an adult present when at the barn.

  • Minors need supervision while riding.

  • Students are welcome to “hang out” at the farm during designated lesson and training times. They should expect to help with chores or observe and lend a hand to other students. Extra time at the barn is considered a learning opportunity.

  • Lessons will be held in most weather conditions. If temperatures drop below 20 degrees students have the option to postpone lessons.

Lesson Etiquette:

  • Be on time. Being late to a lesson will result in less instructional time.

  • Manure in grooming areas or walkways should be picked up immediately.

  • Make sure tack and boots are clean.

  • Students should “checkout” with the instructor before leaving to ensure horses have been properly cared for after each lesson.

  • Refer to “Lesson Attire and Turnout” for specific clothing and equipment resources and information.
